Since 1992, Chicago-based The Tonka Group, Inc. (TGI) has delivered a seamless, "conception-to-reality" experience by integrating design with construction. By housing our creative studio and our construction arm, Jack and Hammer Builders, under one roof, we eliminate the friction of traditional renovations. From custom manufacturing to full-scale builds, our collaborative team ensures that every project is Design Driven and Build Proven upholding the integrity of the initial sketch through every detail of the final structure.

    Our dedicated construction company transforms TGI’s sophisticated designs into physical structures. By having our builders involved from the very first sketch, we ensure structural feasibility, accurate budgeting, and a standard of craftsmanship that matches our design conviction.

Design/Build

By partnering with our subsidiary, Jack and Hammer Builders The Tonka Group offers a turnkey "Design/Build" model. This "single source of responsibility" minimizes risk and maximizes efficiency. Our clients enjoy accurate cost forecasting and a more dependable construction experience, guided by our elite team of in-house experts and vetted subcontractors.

Tony Mitchell, Principal

Tony was born and raised in Chicago. After graduating from Harrington Institute, he began his professional career working for Andre Richardson King, a firm specializing in environmental design and architectural graphics. He furthered his expertise in the luxury sector at John Robert Wiltgen, a high-end residential interior design firm. Following these formative roles, Tony spent the next four and a half years at OTA Partnership, a Chicago-based architectural firm. After honing his craft Tony founded his own practice in 1992, eventually evolving it into The Tonka Group. In 2022, he completed his vision of a fully integrated design-build model by launching Jack and Hammer Builders, where he continues to lead both firms in striving to establish them as leading forces in the design-build industry.
